What began as a handful of learners in an old mining hostel has become a thriving boarding school in Stilfontein.
Founded by educator Melinda Swart, Pinnacle Primary & Secondary School now serves Grades 1 to 12, maintaining a 100% Matric pass rate and nurturing a generation of learners grounded in discipline, compassion, and pride. Thirty years ago, walking into the principal’s office would have filled most of us with dread. But today, sitting across from Melinda Swart, founder and owner of Pinnacle Primary & Secondary Boarding School just outside Stilfontein, one can’t help but feel inspired. What started as a dream has become a place of purpose — a school shaped by heart, determination, and unwavering pride. Melinda completed her teaching diploma in 1982 in Potchefstroom and went on to teach in towns from Tsumeb in Namibia right through to now Polokwane (Pietersburg). Yet she always carried one dream — to start her own school. In 2000, with just twelve learners, that dream took shape as Pinnacle School. Against doubt and discouragement, Melinda worked through sleepless nights and tears, transforming an old mining hostel into a vibrant learning space. Dormitories became classrooms; open land became playgrounds — and slowly, a school community began to grow. Today, Pinnacle stands tall as a fully fledged boarding school for Grades 1 to 12, employing fourteen teachers and two administrative staff members. The school offers a balanced approach — strong academics coupled with soccer, netball, chess, and choir — nurturing both mind and spirit.
Led by Principal Louise Einkamerer, who also teaches Grade 12 Mathematics, and supported by Administrator Hendrik de Bruin, the team continues to uphold the values Melinda instilled. Together, they keep the school running with discipline, care, and pride.
Melinda fondly credits Rina Pretorius, Pinnacle’s first principal, as the right hand who helped her through the school’s formative years. Their shared grit became the foundation on which Pinnacle thrives today. Despite the challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, the school has remained steadfast. They proudly follow South Africa’s national curriculum and are ranked among the Top 10 schools in the KOSH area, boasting a 100% Matric pass rate.
